---|---|---|
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Oaxaca sits in the state of the same name, several hours south of Mexico City. The city and its surrounding villages are especially enchanting for their preservation of not just the ancient ruins, colonial structures, or natural landscapes, but also the culture and heritage of the local indigenous groups. Oaxaca allows a visitor to experience aspects of traditional Mexican, Zapotec, Mixtec, Triqui, and other indigenous cultures through food, crafts, performances, and ceremonies. In markets, plazas, churches, and parks, festivals and music provide free entertainment for local citizens and visitors alike. While maintaining traditions Oaxaca is an energetic modern city as well. Its become a center for culinary innovation and modern art. One of Mexico's most famous modern artists, Francisco Toledo used his wealth to become the main benefactor of museums, a film festival and club, arts schools, and performance spaces. Chefs at high end restaurants combine techniques from the world capitals with local organic ingredients. |
